I'm looking at a OMC 40hp # mr0s27a j-251-3416 Can I convert this engine to tiller control? Also can someone please advise on shaft length? I would really appreciate some help this little motor is exactly what my duck boat needs.

Sorry this is a RDS-27A, I just need to know if tiller was an option, I can't imagine it wasn't. If so can I add the twist grip throttle and a key switch?

Also is this shaft length adjustable ie. spacer block removal or were the factory long shafts fixed as long shafts?

If your engine is not electric shift, it can be fitted with a tiller arm. Basically, the casting around the throttle pointer on the port of the engine is removed and an arm bolted in its place. I believe it uses the same arm as a 33 and 28hp, so it shouldn't be too hard to find. (I've got an arm but it's in bad shape)
If you go dumpster-diving to find your parts, I belive you'll also need the throttle shaft that goes between the handle and the throttle tower gear, as the tiller one has an odd looking brass gear on it so you can tilt the arm up and still operate the throttle.

The shaft length is adjustable, but you need several parts: A spacer, a longer driveshaft, a longer shift-shaft, bolts, and a water tube extension. You have to disassemble the lower unit to fit the longer shift shaft.

Thanx Paul I was hoping to be able to make the changes. A Short Shaft-Electric Start-Tiller-Premix-40hp OMC product is pretty hard to find in S.E Michigan. At least one that is in this good shape for $300.00.
