Pulled the tilt motor today. Hammer blow looks good and all just waiting for new motor to arrive.I noticed grease on the hammer blow coupling. Will I need to regrease that area again? Also anymore tips would be helpful. Also do I need to make a gasket for the motor or do the usually come with it?
Oh, yeah it's a 1980 OMC Stringer 400

I would use a new gasket yes. OEM manual says the housing is supposed to be filled with OIL, not grease......... How did you get the clearance to pull the old motor? With everything that has happened to my stringer, I bet that's next......

Won't hurt it, but no need to.

I had plenty of clearance. Most difficult part was getting to one of the two bolts. Had to feel around with socket to get it. Then getting the motor to break free off of drive. Used a hammer, crowbar and screwdriver to get it to release and trying not to damage any surrounding parts. Getting it back in, well at least the one bolt you cannot see may prove to be challenging.

Binder dundat. Double-jointed fingers help to get that other bolt in. :D

Just lay down, reach/twist your arm in there and use the force. Stretch out with your feelings...... :D

You don't have to pack the area with grease or anything, but a little smeared on all the surfaces wouldn't hurt. My manual doesn't show any gasket between the motor and the mounting surface. I put a thin bead of form-a-gasket on mine just to help keep water out.

Was it hard to get the slots to line up on hammer blow coupling? Also how long was the stud you used and what did you use as gasket material? Thanks

I re-used the old gasket... it's nothing fancy... any gasket material will do.
