Sorry if this has alrady been posted. I have a problem blowing the 50 amp fuse on my 1984 OMC Stern Drive I/O. The list of things I have to check are 1. electric motor (brushes may be stuck) 2. clean the two wire rings that feed the two 50 AMP fuses. 3. Clutch plate (?) 4. worm gear (?). Not sure what to do with item 3 and 4? Anyother suggestions?

Re: OMC tilt problem

I also have a non functioning tilt motor on my 1984 stern drive. I am assuming that you also have an OMC Stringer 400 or 800 series drive.

I have tried applying power direct to the motor and it still won't turn so I suspect its either the motor or the mechanism itself. You may want to check that the solenoid/relays are working correctly because if one relay is stuck closed you could end up with a short (hence blowing fuses).
You need to check that the motor runs with no load on it. Inside the boat, remove the 2 bolts securing the motor to the intermediate housing and remove the motor, connect up the power and see if it runs. If not then its a bad motor and may need new brushes or cleaning etc. If it does run then move onto 3 & 4.
I havent dismantled mine yet, but the worm drive and clutch assembly is inside the small circular casing that drives the half moon gear on the leg. If its blowing fuses then its more likely to be corroded or jammed worm drive than the clutch as if the clutch fails it slips and the leg would fall into its down position regardless of what the tilt motor is doing.

Post again when you have determined if its the tilt motor or the gears

Re: OMC tilt problem

Greg
1: I would first make sure the tilt clutch has motor oil in it and not water. It is very common for
this clutch to get water in it.
2: I would unbolt the three bolts to the 1/4 round tilt gear on the leg and remove the gear.
Then I would try and raise the outdrive by hand and fine out if it is free. With gear still off I
would try your tilt switch and see if motor runs. By this time you should have a good Idea
if the problem is a bind in outdrive pivots due to lack of grease or old grease or if it in the
motor or clutch.
3: Motor can be removed from inside to isolate between motor and clutch. Clutch main
function is to protect outdrive and transom if you hit a under water object while going
Foward.
4: Also have Solenoids to run the motor.

Good luck and please tell us what you find.

Re: OMC tilt problem

I removed the tilt motor today, no problem with the worm drive etc but the motor brushes are dead so I'm now looking to get some replacments.

Re: OMC tilt problem

It has taken me sometime to correct this problem. What I corrected were: 1. Stuck motor 2. Cleaned all the connections including the fuse holder. Sytem is now working well. Thanks for all the suggestions. Greg

Re: OMC tilt problem

See how simple that was compared to a Merc or newer OMC?
