What a great site? Glad I found it. Having problems with the tilt on an OMC 800. The outdrive will only lift several inches before requiring manual assistance. In attempting to toggle the tilt switch to raise the outdrive further, I end up shearing the tilt motor shaft. I have replaced 2 already. Could galling (H20 corrosion)on the worm gear be part of the problem? I've read several suggestions to clean the clutch plates as well. Am I incorrect in assuming that the clutch has nothing to do with the outdrive raising and lowering? My belief was that the clutch only provided lower unit protection in case a submerged object was encountered.

Re: OMC Tilt

Just my experience...

The tilt housing on my my 400 series OMC I/O had a problem with water leaking in to the point where all the motor oil was replace with H2O! Needless to say, it plain stop working to lift the stern drive. I ended up taking it apart and am in the process of rebuilding it. What I've been hearing is that this unit (I believe it's the same on an 800) is notorious for water leaks. And once water get inside, it starts to form rust and eventually will freeze things up. I think that might be the cause of your situation. It's probably a bad design and there's really nothing a person can do about it except to take the housing apart once in a while, clean the inards, and renew the seals, o rings, and gaskets. Anyone else have other suggestions?

Good luck.

Re: OMC Tilt

When you replace the gasket behind the small gear make sure you do not have a lot of wear on the bearing that allows the shaft to move a lot side to side. Also room for two good seals between the small gear and the bearing.
