OMC trim nightmares

I have an OMC jackplate and trim on a 70s Evinrude 85 mounted to a 70s King Fisher fiberglass boat.

The trim has 2 relays, 30amp 4 pin relays and an in line fuse. The down relay had a severely burnt prong that did damage to the fuse but it didn't fully blow. The relays still clicked but the fuse apparently couldn't handle the load and the trim did not operate. I replaced the relays and that didn't help, I replaced the fuse and that solved it. For one trip.

The trim down is intermittent on a regular basis, the trim up occasionally doesn't work. One does not coincide with the other. If I swap relays the down trim will work and now the up trim won't. The problem follows the suspect telay. These are expensive little relays locally ($17ea). The wiring has no frays and looks to have no corrosion.

I don't want to keep throwing relays at this trim if I have an underlying issue.

Occasionally when the trim down works, it will continue to trim down on its own until I hit the trim up button, hold it, and send my buddy back to pop the down relay. I have 2 trim switches and it's happening with both. My guess is I have a bad relay from the store, or I have a ground issue?

The relays are standard parts. They are old and sticking in either position. Go to your local U-Pull-It junkyard and for a 2-5 buck entry fee you can get a dozen from most American autos.

Is there damage to the plug that you put the fuse into? Did it overheat and melt? Try cleaning that up and/or switch that portion out.

Also double check the wiring to make sure it is wired correctly after the relay swap, and make sure the metal is clean down to SHINY metal.

Replaced the relay and all is good for now. My guess is the new relay was faulty?
