Hi, I’m new on the forum so I will try to get it right with the info to start my question. I have a 1988 Bayliner Capri with an OMC Cobra 2.3 engine 232AMRGDP no power steering. The manual doesn’t show that ring that is common on newer OMC ujoint bellows. The ring that is difficult to install after the bellows has been seated in the housing groove. When I took my ujoint bellows out it didn’t have a ring and the manual doesn’t show it either. My question is is this a part they added to the bellows to make it a tighter fit? When I ordered the part number the manual gave, it came with the metal ring. It looks like it would fit but only if I used some kind of pressing tool. I know it originally didn’t have it but if it’s an improvement and I should install it I will or is it just meant for later models?

Hi, I'm in your same situation with the 5.7 cobra. Originally, there was no ring. The replacement came with a ring but it seems impossible to fit. The ring seems bigger than the opening of the below My new below has a lip and it looks like it's being hooked onto the opening of the pivot housing.
The ring might be used for Merc drives?
That's how mine is and I would be curious to find out too if I have it all wrong.
In red is the bellow and the green is where it hooks on the pivot housing.
