Hi everyone, im new to boating and long story short believe the guy who serviced my outdrive didn't know how to properly fill it. First ride I lost my upper drive due to lack of oil . My new marina says i need a drive with a 21:18 ratio
I have a 1993 four winns with a cobra 5.0 l engine. Does anyone know if a upper off of a 1987 bayliner with model # 984542 with 5.0l and ratio 1:5 will work?

Well i havent heard any thoughts or suggestions but what i have found on my own is this awesome catalog on omc outdrives http://www.glmmarine.com/pdf/OMC_Catalog.pdf
As far as i can see, 1986-1988 5.0l engines used a ratio of 21:17
In 1988-93 it used 21:18
For whatever reason the model number i have does not coincide with this catalog for some reason.

There's a very specific way to fill the drive with oil... and if you don't do it the right way... it apparently leaves air in it and cooks the drive the first ride out. Sounds like your guy did it wrong... charge him for it!

If the upper is cooked - good chance the lower is compromised as well. Look for a complete used unit - install after confirming positive pressure check

Id like to but boat sat winterized for 2 winters and then i just ran it. I was told I shouldn't have any issues. I didnt have it summerized so i can't completely prove the shop screwed up.

The marina that has the boat now says they drained the oil to see if the lower was affected and they did not see any metal shavings. Im pretty sure these units are almost 2 seperate cases. There is a tube though that connects them.

Ive found another topic on here where a guy used a 21:18 to replace his 21:17. I have a 21:17 that im gonna attempt to replace my 21:18 with. Both drives were off of 5.0l. I hear it may meed the prop to be repitched.

You can use a different ratio and make up the difference with prop pitch if need be.

Sounds like you have a plan. The ratios sound close enough. Try it and go boating!!
