I recently purchased a 1988 140 HP Evinrude. The VRO has been disconnected and the oil/gas is being premixed. I would like the to reconnect the VRO but I have heard they are not safe. What do you experts out there think?
Thanks

Re: OMC VRO PUMP

That's a loaded question. A lot say they are not safe, a lot say they are. I did a lot of reading as well. I may have an article or two saved on my pc if you want me to email them to you. send me an email at blg@cox.net.

I had the same questions on mine, which is an 86 150. Mine was hooked up, but I was worried. Ended up loosing a ring, so I did a rebuild. While I was at it, I bought a new pump for about $280. I didn't want to pre-mix.

I have since read they can easily be rebuilt for around $30. My old one was a 2 wire unit, the new is 3 and it has a blue fitting. I'm glad I went new. I don't remember what the blue fitting means, but it was mentioned as being better, I believe. The extra wire is a purple wire, which I believe goes to the choke (?).

If you want to hook it up, you can do so, just run 50:1 mix in fuel tank until you verify the VRO is using oil from oil tank. I would also verify the low oil alarm sounds. I believe that can be tested by hooking up the VRO w/out oil in the oil tank, but 50:1 mix in fuel tank and running the motor. If the alarm sounds, the alarm is working. From there fill the oil tank, unhook the oil line from pump, prime reconnect and keep an eye on it.

Like I said, I read a lot about them and decided to keep mine.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do....

If the system works I to would rather let the pump do the work. I never know how much oil to add between outings. Not knowing how much fuel is actually left in the tank, I Usually over estimate the amount of oil just in case. Any additional information you might have I would appreciate. My email address is merritt48@bellsouth.net.

Well, I'd hit Ebay and find yourself a tank, oil line and wiring harness to hook it up. Alot of times they sell them all together. Once you get that stuff and hook it up, you're good to go. Continue to pre-mix until you confirm that the pump is working. Most make a mark on the oil tank and then watch it to make sure oil is being used. I would run 12 gallons or so while still pre-mixing to verify all is well.

Do you still have the oil tank and oil lines?
Hi Rick. No I don't have the tank nor any of the electronics. However I did find two tanks on ebay both ads say the units are complete one even goes on to say the alarm is still in tact. After I get one I'll be back to you guys for help in the installation.
Thanks Again

No problem. It's fairly straightforward...
My 1.8 gal VRO/2 oil tank kit came in today. The hoses look fairly easy . The wiring may be a problem. The wire coming from the tank, I assume goes to the low oil horn. There is a connector with a black wire and a tan and black stripe wire. Where does this connect.
Thanks

That is correct. Black is a ground and the tan wire will go to the horn. With no oil in the tank, the path will be to ground and the alarm will sound.
