OMC vs. Seaking

I may have a chance to purchase a 1959 Gale Seaking, 40 hp or a 1957 Johnson, 35 hp. It would seem to me that it would be easier to find parts and service for the Johnson. Is this correct? Would you steer clear of older, less prevelant models like Seaking and some others?

Dennis

Re: OMC vs. Seaking

Dpropson,As you may know the Gale motor is a devision of OMC.
Parts interchange with similarly styled E/J motors. Some of the same parts may fit both those motors. Some parts for both motors are still available at NAPA auto parts and any good E/J
dealer.Parts wont be listed by Gale motor numbers
but similar E/J parts should be easy to match.
Obviously Parts spicific to the Gale may be tough to get.
While I wouldnt use that old of a motor for every day use I wouldnt be afraid of the parts supply. Those old motors are terrible gas hogs. And those older than 1960 require the original 24:1 fuel mix.

Re: OMC vs. Seaking

Dpropson, I was looking for a manual for that model Sea King at the Ken Cook site and could not find one. The foremost authority would be at http://www.aomci.org

Click their ask a member link. they can tell you which would be easier to get parts for and probably which is the better runner. Have you checked compression on each of the motors?

And then someone sits at his computer reading this forum topic and says to himself. "I have GALE parts manuals in that cabinet I never cleaned out. I wonder what it's worth for someone to have me make a copy and send it to him. ???

Scoop,
By Ken Cook, do you mean the Ken Cook of Holland Michigan of Kencraft fame of the mid-50s or the mid-70s Ken Cook boat company? Please, send me anything you know about the Holland, Mi. Ken Cook boat company. I will check out the link you provided, thanks.

Ice,
I'm not sure what you are getting at, tell me more.

Thanks to both,

Dennis

I have a parts manuals for a 1959 Gale outboard, and the 1957 Johnson outboard. I would be willing to make a copy and send it. I can check with Staples or Kinkos to see what they would charge to make copies of the pages. At least that would help you get part numbers for the engines.

Gale outboards are just Plain Jane Evinrudes/Johnsons in another wrapper. If the price is right you have nothing to lose, but if you trust only certain brands/names then keep looking til you find what YOU can live with. I personally like Gales, and Evvies, and Johnsons, and Champions, and Martins, and Mercs. Go figure.
