Violet is 12v hot wire from Ignition. Grey is tach.

Is black an already grounded wire ran from the engine block? Or does it NEED to be grounded.

Thanks.

Re: OMC Wire Cluster Question. Violet/Grey/Black

If you are speaking of the three conductors coming from a remote throttle and shift control and generally known as the tachometer connector, the conductor with BLACK insulation should already be bonded to the outboard engine chassis and the battery negative. It is difficult to connect conductors on a boat to ground due to the presence of water all around. See

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/ignitionSwitch.html

for an illustrated article on the typical ignition switch wiring for OMC and BRP outboard engines.

You can use that conductor to connect gauges which need a -12-Volt return circuit.

purple 12v + ign.
black 12v - gnd.

are you trying to hook a gauge up or trying to backtrack wires? there should be a diagram at the top of the "electrical" section of the forums.
