ive always wondered, if you have 3 batteries.

2 batteries wired together for a 24volt trolling motor

1 cranking battery

would you need a 3 bank charger or will both trolling batteries charge as one since they are wired together.

No. You have to remember, each of the batts wired in series are really still 12V batts. A charger has leads that attach to the hot and ground of each batt. Since, in a 24V setup, your ground and hot are combined, the 12V output of the charger won't read this. You need a 3-bank charger.

Re: on board charger question

I have a 19' Crestliner, and the 2 deep cycle batteries for trolling will be towards the bow, and the starting battery is back by the OB. Would it be better to get a 2 bank and a 1bank, wired separately, or a 3 bank, with one long connection from bow to starter?

Does it make any difference in how they would perform, or is it simply a matter of personal preference?

The advantage of the 3 bank with long connection is I'd only have to plug it in once, to charge all 3.

Re: on board charger question

First, to answer bama's question. There are several good manufacturers out there. We use ProMariner at Proline, I like them a lot, but some will disagree here. Many here use Guest, which we used to use, and a lot of people like them. Minn Kota makes a good charger. But almost all of todays chargers don't really care what type of battery you have, be it lead-acid, AGM, or Gel Cell. However, Gel cells require lower input voltages, the good chargers will allow you to set them for gel cells.

Now capndan, I personally would go with a 3-bank, rather than a 2 and 1. You can extend the leads up to about 25' using 10GA wire, just remember to keep the in-line fuse holders at the ring terminal ends in place when you splice that end back on to your extension. I've been doing this for years at the OEM builder level with Guests, ProMariners, Charles, Xantrex chargers, never a problem. One thing you might want to use to make your install a lot neater is one of these...

...made by Marinco, which gets hardwired. Either way, you can mount it in an obscure location, it gets rid of a bunch of coiled up wire, simply plug your extension cord into it and you're good to go...

Re: on board charger question

seabob, thanks for the reply...confused a little by this:
"....just remember to keep the in-line fuse holders at the ring terminal ends in place when you splice that end back on to your extension."

Are you telling me that the in-line fuse holders need to stay as close to the terminal ends, after extending the length, as they were to begin with, or just to make sure I re-attach them?

It sounds to me like your telling me to cut the lead, and splice the 10GA wire in the middle, and re-attach the terminal end piece.

thanks,

Re: on board charger question

Dan,
When you buy a charger, regardless of brand, you'll notice the in-line fuse holders are within 7" of the battery terminal. This is to ABYC/NMMA requirements. Therefore, if you extend the leads, you simply cut off the ring terminal ends about a foot up from the ring terminals, splice in your extension, then splice back on the original ends. And make sure you use 10GA tinned, stranded copper wire. Don't buy the crap you get at HD or Lowes. Here's a site that has excellent prices on excellent marine wire...Genuinedealz

No problem. BTW, I recommend the ProMariner ProSport 20+ for a 3 bank charger...but there will be others that disagree...
