On buying a used Merc 175hp OB...

Hi,

I may have to retire my 1986 125hp Force OB this season due to gear issues.

I have my eye on a 2001 Merc 175hp EFI OB. The "average retail" on NADA is $5,285. It's selling for $5,999 ($614 difference).

What are the things I should be looking out for and asking when I talk to the dealer? I'm vulnerable right now as I have been drooling for years to get me a newer/faster engine but money has always held me back. I still don't have the money, but now I have an excuse.

Some things I know about it: It was used in salt water. I will use it in fresh. And the cover looks kind of beat.

Would it be the same wt. as my 125 hp Force? My 1986 Bayliner Bowrider ski boat is max. rated for a 150 hp.

Thanks.

there are legal difficulties in going to more than the rate hp. insurance will not pay off. the authorities, can declare it an unsafe vessel by being overpowered.

I never thought of that. Thank you. That settles that.

I was also considering a Merc 135 HP. What would be good questions to ask and things to be aware of?

Thanks

you want compression numbers, spark test, hear it run, check lower unit for water. overall look and condition, when was impeller last changed, look for burnt wires or burnt paint on the powerhead, (sign it has run hot) compression the higher over 100 psi the better, but most important is that they are within 10% of each other. is the prop chewed up, or the skeg damaged, could show abuse.
