I have 2 75 merc 850's one i have decided to use as a parts motor. I took the one apart completly and i checked the gap in the reed valves and 2 of the valves are open about .015. Should i get new valves or are the ones i have fine?

If it's just 2 petals it outta be "OK". But the better the reeds are the better it'll idle down.

-W

Re: ? on rebuilding engine

If i have another block that matches the one I am running know, and asuming the cylinders are not warped, can i rebuild that block? ex. reed blocks, new rings, and have it bored. The compression on the block i am thinking about rebuilding is between 105 and 120 on the cylinders, and the rings are shot, the cylinders are in good condition but their is some obvious wear on the pistons. The engine i am running know has compression of 150-145 on each cylinder. Or should i just wait and rebuild the engine i am using know. The advantage would be to have the other one rebuilt and ready to go by the time i get the engine apart.

I'm not sure if new reed blocks are still available or not. No reason you can't have a spare waiting in the wings. Even if you don; tlike it as much it could tide you over till you get the "A" block redone.

-W

Re: ? on rebuilding engine

I found new boyesen reeds at boyesen.com and some new piston rings. The reason for using the engine is it is much cleaner and runs much better. I did not feel like taking the other engine apart and rebuilding the pistons during mid summer so i baught another nicer looking one just like it. I figured i could rebuild the block and put it on the nicer motor, but i am nervous about the nicks on the sides of the pistons. None of them are deep but there are alot of surface, and the rings are very loose. The newer motor has the better compression 150-145 psi, but i figured if i am opening the block mine as well bore it out and put on new rings. Since this block has good compression i would like to keep it around in case anything happens to the one i am rebuilding. Do you think the pistons will give me any problems, or should i just clean them up and use them.
