Sorry if this is a newbie oil thread, but I think I heard some BS in the boat store today....

Someone was asking the counter parts jokey if Synthetic was worth the price. He said it was better oil, but cautioned that once you go synthetic you can't go back because the synthetic oil adds a coating that won't allow regular oils to lubricate properly if you switch back.

Sounds like BS. Any truth to it?

Sounds like a load of something I have lying around in my back yard. (Hint: I have a golden retriever.)

Well maybe the synthetics leave behind a super hard carbon that the detergents in the dino oil can't desolve. But, if that were the case what good were the synthetics anyway?

Ran a '77 35hp on regular oil for about 5 years, then switched to 100:1 Amsoil for about 5 years, then got smart and switched back to 50:1 TC-W3. It now pumps about 145 lbs of compression and runs great. What you heard is BS.

The E-Tec can be programmed to run synthetic at about half the rate of reg. You can go back to reg, but you have to have the computer reprogrammed first. Also, a good idea to make sure all the reg is run thru the tank and lines.

Maybe this is part of what the parts person was talking about.

I once heard the same story at a local auto shop, but I don't believe it. I think it is a sales ploy to convince you to keep buying the more expensive oil. Personally, I like the synthetic oils enough to not go back, but I do this because there is less smoke and not out of fear the old oil will harm my motor.

I've changed back and forth time and time again. My outboard is 20 years old, and I've never had a problem.
