over the last few days I have read a lot of reports and such, unanimously condemning the Uniroyal Tiger Paw

Wears like IRON ...

... with about as much traction in wet and snow

granted, between bedrug(getting it) sway bar (getting it) and tonneu (also getting it)

(well, sway bar and tonneu, then bed rug)

I dont see myself getting new tires right away, but I spin that truck one time, those tires are gone, lol

I drove them on dry road, right around an on ramp at a pretty good rate, they didnt slip at all

now, with it being new and all, ill be cautious at first, but I tend to feel things out quickly and start testing limits

by the way, lookin a LOT like a Saturday delivery date, fingers toes and a few trillion DNA crossed

thats THIS saturday, two days away

LONG, LONG days

lol

I just put a set of Dayton A/T (Timberline model I think) on my Ranger.
They were ripping through 6+" of snow this past weekend without one slip.

I also took them in their first mud bog on a nasty hill, and it went right up it.

So far, I'm impressed.

My 2 cents,

H.

Re: One Last Question - Which tire has the best traction?

I had tiger paws on my s15. They were ok, but a soft compound, so they wore very quickly. Or I drove them too hard.

I now run M+S on my truck and vans, gravel roads, snow, ice, sand/gravel launches. Not a heavy lug off road tire, and not an all season, but a mud and snow. 3-400 pounds of bird seed, placed just in front of the axle, really helps on snowy conditions. They ride beautifully on the highway, too. BFGoodrich makes some dandys.

I imagine you will be running on paved roads, as you live in civilization, so a less aggressive tread would do fine. I would seek out the best WET pavement tire.

Based on past experience, your Tiger Paws should do okay for a while. Maybe give you a year before the traction gets nasty.

I ran my tiger paws a couple of years on my S-10 and then switched to B.F.Goodrich,In the winter (lake Ont. snow belt) I ran B.F.goodrich studded snow tires from wally world and never got stuck again. Enjoy your new truck.

Ran mine until the first snow. Tried to stop at a stop sign and now way would the tires bite. Stopped and had them changed on the way to work.

They were fine in the rain (I was in Vancouver at the time) and dry but were useless in one inch of snow.

So, Ray, does it snow were you are?

And are you aware they have a forum for your new truck on www.chevytalk.com Maybe I'm too late, but it might be a better place to ask the questions.

Ray,

I would only recommend one type of tires for that vehicle, I've used them on every vehicle I've owned...
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^^
^
^
^
^
^
^
^
%
$
&
^

ROUND ONES!

I have been using Cooper Discoverers on my rigs since I have lived up here in Idaho. For the price, they do quite well in the snow, and they wear pretty good. We use them on our work trucks also, because we needed a tire that can get a rear wheel drive truck through some fairly rough stuff. Some of our customers live up in the mountains and their drivways are terrible, almost Rubicon Trail terrible sometimes (in my mind anyway). They are pretty quiet, and the price is decent ( I paid $130 apiece for 31x10.5 on my F150)....

Re: One Last Question - Which tire has the best traction?

seemed like last winter it snowed every couple days - I do rememeber the Continental ConTrac have phenominal traction, but im no longer a hot shot diesel jockey making a grand or two a week, if those things were 135 apiece installed near 20 years ago, well dey GOTS to be more now

and, quite frankly, when it snows REAL bad, about the only thing better in snow than her Outback is a pack of huskies and a sled (besides, dont wanna track snow into the new truck, lol :p )

When I had the Econoline Van running those Helwig sway bars, it had phenominal dry cornering, comp TA radials are incredible in dry conditions

then it snowed

I slid right out onto Rt 70, very very busy main road in these parts, by some miracle, there was no traffic, I slid right into a "hole" in the traffic, got it turned and drove at five miles an hour down to a tire joint, and said, whats your best tire, he said ConTrac, I took a look at em, was impressed, and peeled off the bills, lol GIMME DEM TIRES

the werent comp TA in the dry stuff, but dammn good, and snow? ha! never got stuck, and those were the skiing years, up in the poconos, snow squall hit, and near four tons of truck just motor on thru, no chains or nothin

The pep boys Futuras on the chebby aint bad, but blackwalls are too drab. and as much as I like white walls, the only ones that would work are the thin red line tires, and they prolly dont make em anymore, and besides, they prolly SUCK anyway

the guys on the different posts all say the same thing, the tiger paws SUCK for traction but they are barely worn at 50K ... frugal basstard that I am, I would hate chucking a new looking tire too, but ive done it before, lol, I go sliding around, bye bye Paws!!!

I second the Dayton Timberline A/T. We have a set on my wifes Cherokee and they have been great. Also they were top rated by Consumer reports and the price is great. I paid $380 out the door for 4 235/70/15. Take care.

The Timberline A/T is a great tire, but was my second choice (would have been more than happy with them). My first choice for my F-150 is a set of Bridgestone Dueller A/T REVOS. I have yet to spin pulling my 4000lb rig up any ramp. Great tires.

Hey Castaway: A novel Idea. One set for winter and one set for summer. Huh? This way you got the best of both worlds and you aren't throwing anything away.

Re: One Last Question - Which tire has the best traction?

thats a great idea, but what I understand is wet handling degrades exponentially

eh, Im careful in the wet, and a maniac in the dry, should be somewhat ok, but those Timberlines sound pretty good! are they a good long distance street tire? (boating season is right around the conrner, and Im no longer limited by the confines of a trunk!)

Ray, if you mean traction in the snow, it's best
to go with a good skinny tire, not the fat one's
that look good :)
BTW... what is her tow capacity?
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: One Last Question - Which tire has the best traction?

they are saying 3000 pounds, which given the fact that south jersey is bout flat as a pancake down in these parts, is very conservative.

apparently the auto trans is the same one they install in the 4.3, which is a far FAR more substantial engine, so the trailering strain shouldnt be a big issue

the only boat I currently have that exceeds three thou is the SeaCraft, and even a 4.3 S-10 would be hard pressed for that sorta duty, the motor would PULL it but the c hassis would be overwhelmed by the wieght, minimal 5000 pounds, and the trailer brakes died long long ago

no worries, the 79 Ford with its 300 6 has boatloads (!) of torque, and a few thousand more pounds of mass, giant discs, no sweat

I got that covered!

What ever brand of tires I run, I always do one thing to em when they're new.
Sipe em!
They'll run cooler, quieter, better traction in all conditions and last longer.
Just my experience. :)

Re: One Last Question - Which tire has the best traction?

the information I found is that its best to get a siping tool and do it yourself, the commercial sipers will take off edges and cause chunking, also, the shoulder lugs shouldnt be siped cause of chunking

do you sipe your own TM?

thanks for the heads up on that, this dammn truck sure is teaching me a lot, this could make those tiger paws actually stick like TIGER PAWS, lol

off to harbor frieght, see if they sell em

lol

CR,
I never have done my own, but stand and watch mine be done always.
I've never seen "chunking" or the like, but then I always buy from a buddy of mine and he knows how particular I am about stuff being done right.
It'll cost more to have em done after they've been on the road because of gravel and stuff inside the treads, but if your gonna do em yourself, you may be able to remove most of the debris 1st.
Good luck on doin it yourself and let us know how it works out for ya. :)
