1974 Mercury 1150 I6.
Ran Great 2 weeks ago but wouldn't charge battery.
Replaced stator and rectifier.
Boats idle changed and in turn boat wouldn't stay running at idle.
Checked timing, when at TDC 0 on flywheel, the mark on the pulley above the distributor didn't line up (it was one tooth to the right)
Changed timing one tooth left.
Water tested, boat ran good in water (idle seemed slightly higher than usual). Pulled wakeboarder.
On a long steam across the lake, it died out at WOT. Checked timing marks, seemed like the mark on distributor had moved one tooth left.
In nuetral engine will run at wot and has great throttle response. Under load it will not plane out.
Did I damage my motor by changing the timing? Does this mean I have a timing belt problem?
I have not made any changes nor have I had any problems with the fuel system.
