Only 12 days to racoon season! I about have all my traps ready, just need to soak skunk smell out of a few. My box traps only need two spots welded and I am ready to go. Am going scouting tonight on some new land I have to trap this year, should be promising. I also have an old rock quary this year to trap. Will be great for fox and Bobcat.

What I am really ready for is the hunting. Anyone who's ever been knows what I am talking about. Anyone who has never been, find some redneck coon hunter and go sometime. You will be addicted! It is fast paced good time, not like sitting in trees waiting for deer :D and those raccoons often fight back  which adds to the fun.

Never tried it myself, trap a few Muskrat to keep the population down on the pond.

Do you eat the meat or just for the hides? Some of my kin in KY love the meat....... I've not had the opportunity to try some...

Re: Only 12 days left!

I trapped a coon in the attempt to catch cats for the pound (the catwoman lives in the neighborhood, and "cares for" about 50 of them)...
What a viscous critter!! I had a hard time just getting close enough to the trap to release it! The rascals carry rabies too, from what i have heard.
I can attest first-hand to the rush. They don't like to be trapped much.
My bro had a pet racoon that was real "entertaining". They have a mind of their own, like a cat, only smarter than any cat. They bite harder when they "play" too.

12footer you too.. I won't say anymore.. But if you shot one in the rear with a bb, they can jump over 3ft. high.. No, I didn't hurt em. But it was funny.. Didn't think I could aim that good..

It is funny when you shine the light on them coons.. Its almost like they are smiling at you and then your buddy blows them out of the tree..
I really didn't think he was serious when he invited me coon hunting..
I thought it was some kind of joke..

Re: Only 12 days left!

Brings back some goooooood memories DD. I love the sound of the hounds!! I could identify exactly which dog was barking, how hot the trail was, etc. I remember losing a couple of dogs, we would put our coat down on the ground. The next morning, they would be there. Except for the $2,000 dog my Dad bought in 1980. He was headed for the next county, I swear. Never saw him again.
Bad part, we only got to run him about 5 times. Mom wasn't very happy about that!
I used to run a trapline with my Dad. Lots of fine memories there, too.
He used walnut shells to dye his traps. We would build a big fire, put the bottom half of a 55 gallon drum on there, dump water in, boil, dye, dry the traps. Lot of work, but it was worth it.

Again, Thanks for bringing back the memories.
AK Chappy

Re: Only 12 days left!

Growing up I had 3 dogs, dad had 4 or 5 dogs. At one time dad had a pair that were grand night champions. He won a lot of competition hunts with them. 1 got caucght and killed in a trap, the other never really worked after that. They were great, 1 ran cold trails best the other ran hot trails good.

Now I live in town and really have no place for a dog. I really wish I could find a good cheap hound or two. They work better in pairs. I can still hear the baying up and down the river when I was a kid.

Now I just walk ridges spotlighting the tree line, or climb trees den diving.

Had a friend with a pet raccoon years ago. He was cutting trees, cut one down with a den and killed the mother. Great pets with their little hands and their curiosity. They have amean streak though, never ever make one mad and hang around. Had more than 1 dog get killed fightin a coon. Last dog I had back in about 1985 was running a hot trail into the river. The coon turned and attacked the dog in the water drowning it. I have even had a time or two walking the river banks in the dark, getting too close to a den hole and the sucker came out after me.

They can and do carry rabies, but no more than any other scavenger or wild animal would. I have never found one rabid yet, but their out there I am sure.

By the way, I don't eat them. Just sell the pelts for money. Back when I was runnin hounds I was gettin around $35 to $40 a peice. Got an easy 500 each season. Pretty good money for dad and I considering I was just a teenager. This year they are expected to be fromm $5 to $10 each thanks to PETA.

I didn't even know there was a coon season!

DD you have me a bit confused with the thanks PETA remark.

I'm assuming (yes I know what that means) ;) that peta has shortened up the season or something. Wouldnt that make the pelt sell for more money.
Supply and demand??

Curious in Lakewood

No,
PETA has made the wearing of fur less fashionable. Therefore, less demand for the fur, lower prices.
A lot of people think that we should just leave all animals alone and let them go. They don't realize that man killed the natural predators, and must now take the place of them to prevent overpopulation. SSSSSIIIIIGGGGGHHHHH.
I will step down off my soapbox, before I derail this thread.

AK Chappy

Re: Only 12 days left!

That is why I said RACcoons. Just to be safe.... ;)

They have reduced the number of deer permits allowed here a year. Since doing that Chronic Wasting Disease has emerged killing a lot of deer slow painful death. Experts say it is because of overpopulation, and the spread will not be controlled with the large population.

They say hunting and trapping raccoons is cruel to the animal. That's why we give thema sporting chance.
"Many times we knock a coon out of a tree amongst 20 dogs. But that coon has the option of whuppin all those dogs and walkin away if he has a mind to. This is strickly left up to the coon." :D
