I finally got a spark in both cylinders of my 1965 40hp johnson. I got it to turn over but it wont throttle up or idle. i can make it idle for a about a min with the choke fully on, and when i close the choke it dies. I went through the carb and its clean and everything is working. do you think its the main jet? also when i get it going for about a min it wont start back up.

Sounds like a fuel restriction somewhere. Is the tank vented and all the hoses free from leaks ??
Just my initial 2 cents with the info so far.

Don't use starter fluid in there. It has no lubrication in it and can cause metal to metal contact and wear. Use some regular 50 to 1 mix in a spray bottle if necessary.
How good is the spark ?? are you using a spark tester?? are the plugs getting wet if you do not spray anything in there ??

im not useing a spark tester, the spark looked good when i was testing it earlier but ill have to check it again to see if soemthign got knocked loose. the plugs done seem that wet...the reed valves are fine... im taking the carb off again to see if the jet is clogged

Make sure that all the gaskets and seals in the carb are in place. If it only runs with the choke out, you are sucking air somewhere.

i had a bowl gasket that slightly kicked aside when i put the bowl on the carb and restricted one of the holes,it did the same thing but only in idle ,with the choke on it made pull the fuel ,might want to double check your carb gaskets, just a thought
