Hello,
A dealer recently told me the only way to accurately test a VRO pump is to put the boat in the water and run the motor at Wide Open Throttle. Is this correct?

Test it for what? Fuel side? Oil side? Sounds like your dealer is looking for business...

Re: only way to test vro is at WOT???

This is the frustrating point. I wasn't having oil/fuel issues when I brought the motor to the dealer (1990 90 hp Evinrude). It was starting hard when hot and he told me the vro pump was the cause. So, he replaced it. The motor is still starting hard, so I took the old pump and had it tested at another shop using a vacuum/pressure tester and it worked fine. I went back to the dealer who sold me the pump asking for my money back. He told me the other shop couldn't have properly tested the pump other than on the motor.

Not true. There are bench tests that can verify if the pump is capable of operating to full capacity. And the vacuum/pressure test is one. Sounds like the installing dealer is not willing to admit his mistake and eat the costs. Not much you can do about that except what you did by asking for a refund. Lot of dealers like that apparently...Don't know if you read this or not, but good info:

Hi.....and thanks for your help. The dealer also told me that fuel was leaking out the crankcase pulse fitting and that I was lucky the motor didn't catch on fire. I don't have the trained eye that you have, but I don't see how that could happen. After looking at the diagram and reading the article, it would seem that if a diaphragm was torn, the motor would simply stop running. Any thoughts?? Thanks again.

I hope he didn't charge you extra for the pulse limiter, it comes with the pump.

Well, mine came with one. It was all in the same package from OMC. Now I have 2.

Re: only way to test vro is at WOT???

Thanks Fleet Admiral..........I checked the pump as far as I could go; was able to test the pressure part, not vacuum, and so far so good. Now I have to get my hands on a vacuum tester. I've also heard a way to test the vro pump is to cover the fuel outlet and then pump fuel into the pump thru the fuel intake using the primer bulb, and if fuel comes out the pulse fitting, the pump is bad. Does that sound correct to you? And if so, are parts available to rebuild the pump? Thanks,
John

my pump went and I found out by pumping my primer bulb it would not get hard because gas would go right through to the crankcase via the pulse fitting filled up my two bottom pistons ,,with the vro off you can blow into the gas inlet and you should not hear air come out pulse fitting side

You've done a nice job with this situation by stating facts, relaying experiences and asking questions rather than bashing the dealer by stating the obvious -- he doesn't know what he's doing. I really wish there was a way to, politely, let other folks be warned about dealers like that and who they are. Boating is expensive enough without having to buy unecessary parts.

I had mine tested off the engine using a vaccume setup. I think he mis diagnosed your problem, had you buy an expensive part, and is flat out lieing to you so he does not have to eat the pump. We had a dealer who would charge you 1,000 bucks everytime you brought in your engine for serive due to some "problem" he found, It is a sad fact but people out there exist. Wish you the best.

So if fuel comes out the pulse fitting on the pump, does that mean the pump is bad? Thanks,
John

yes, fuel can only get to the pulse side of the pump through a punctured diaphram.

Thank you. This is what my pump is doing; checked it last night. This also confirms that the dealer took advantage of me and sold me a new pump when a rebuild kit would've done the trick. God Bless America!!
