So with the new boat. 496ho with Silent choice. I do a lot of cruising mid to high speed long distance sometimes 1/2 hour or more at a time. Should I be in silent mode for times like this? Just wondering if having it is straight through if the lack of back pressure would effect the engine after a period of time. Or is it ok to just leave it open and let her go?

Yeah, unless you want to be known as that a...hole with the loud boat, but after the first half hour on loud (with the girlfriend or worse yet the wife) you will have your answer LOL!

Lol, So true. The wife will be the ultimate decision maker on that. On the off day I go out tooling around its going to have to be open. I will be just one of the crowd for noise around here a lot of boats have straight exhaust. Not to mention the twin turbine that runs by every once in a while.

Maybe in my younger wilder days I would want to draw attention to myself with loud exhaust. Now that I have matured some, okay gotten older, I like the peace and quite on the water and therefore would love to have everything as quite as I can make it... I like hearing nature myself... JMHO!

As far as power goes, most marine engines are basically truck engines designed to run somewhere around 4800 RPM, so it probably won't make a great deal of difference, besides when you are planned out at speed you will not see a lot of backpressure from the water in either case, except it may SEEM to be going faster the louder it sounds LOL!

Yeah. When I had the Capt's Call on my OMG 460 King Kobra, the only difference going to thru-hull did was having everybody say "TURN IT OFF, TURN IT OFF!!!!"
