i am presently running a 4 st 9.8 on my 1444 g3 mv jon. 2 men and gear i top out a 9.8, sometimes i can hit 10 mph. 1 man i top out over 19 mph.i purchased my 9.8 in the mistaken belief that i would be fishing hp limited lakes. i am now wondering about getting a 20 hp 4 st. would i see enough of a speed difference to justify this purchase? the boat is rated up to a 25 hp, but the amont of weght that that entails scares me. i also like the single carbs available on the 20 hp. my ideal cruising speed would be from 15 to 20 mph, is that achievable? any opuinion appreciated

I would think that 15 should be attainable with that. 20 with 2 guys and gear may be pushing it a bit. But it should put you right in that area.

You'll be fine with a 20. You might want to move the tank to the front to offset some weight.

I went from a 9.9 to a 20HP on my 14 ft tinny Duroboat. With the 9.9 top speed with 1 was about 19, but it would not plane with 3 in the boat and topped out at about 12-14MPH. With the 20, top speed is about 25 for 1 person (and probably limited by the prop, not the hp) and only a few MPH less with 3. Cruises easily at 2/3 throttle at 16-18 mph with 3 aboard.
