Newby here, found this forum while doing research on outboards. I'm getting back into boating....this time power instead of sail. (I always liked fishing better than sailing anyway)

I have found a 1988 Aquasport Fisherman 22 that I like and it will work well as a bay and offshore boat off Texas. The price is good, and the condition of the boat is good, but I wanted to check opinions about the engine before having it pre-purchase inspected. It's the 225, 3.0 carbed 25" shaft.

I already had a dealer pull up the warranty repair history with the serial number and it's pretty clean, at least until 1996. (prop shaft seal, adaptor plate, exhause plate). One quirk is that it is a reverse rotation. The dealer said it would cost alittle more to work on the lower unit, but other than that......no big deal.

I don't care about hole-shot or 60mph. Most of the time we'll be going 20-30. So the size, power, and speed will be fine. I'm more interested in whether or not that year/model was a lemon design. Is their anything about this motor to stay away from?

And, BTW, I'm mechanically inclined and have rebuilt car motors. Can a homeowner rebuild this engine (and do a good job) and what ballpark would it cost me in parts (just in case it's worn-out and my option is to rebuild it).

Thanks, and I'll welcome myself aboard.....
