I am looking at a 25 hp 1983 Evinrude with electric start. What is the approximate weight of this motor? Is it OK for a 14-15 aluminum V boat? Are the 1983 models as reliable as restored 1970's? I really appreciate your opinions and assistance!
Thanks in advance>

Probably close to 100 lbs +/-, including the battery. Might be a tad big for your boat but, the boat should have a tag stating the max hp. Whatever you do, don't wear your favorite hat the first time out! Not alot of difference in the 70's vs 80's except for electronic ignition and a couple of minor differences. Personally, I'd go with the older model but that's just me.

I don't see were one model, point or CDI, is any more reliable than the other. Over-all condition for me would be a bigger concideration.

The boat is also the question. If it is rated for a 25hp then there is no problem. Again condition matters. Even if it is rated for that if it is beat up and the transom is falling off then it wouldn't be safe with anything on it.

The boat is a Lonestar. The boat is strong, including the transom. The plate on the boat has a barely recognizable Lonestar on it with nothing else visible. The boat is 14ft 5 inches long and is 59 inches at its widest point (beam?). It takes close to 4 men to lift the boat off the trailer. Is a 25 hp 112 pound motor acceptable for this boat?

my best guess. That boat and a 25hp should perform very well.

Those Lonestars are deep and heavy lake boats. With a 25 horse you are well within the limits of their engine capacity. I think you should go with a 35 horse. If you find the tag that shows the allowed horse power it will be for engines with the horse power capacity measured at the power head. After 1982 the horse power was measured at the prop. This is a 10% difference. This means that if you choose to hang a newer engine on that rig you should roughly add 10 % horse power to your calculation. for example, the newer 25 horse engine should be considered a 28.(which is what it used to be called).

The horsepower was measured at the prop starting in 1986 for OMC mtrs.

I have a '59 Lone Star with a '39 Johnson. It's rated for 70hp
