recently i bought a 150merc that was fogged and cards were drained when it went into storage back in 2001 we pulled plugs and shot some wd-40 into cyl the engie started and i let idle for 10 min water pumped good .this is my compression # 1 top 106 # 2 Cyl. 102 #3 Cyl123 # 4 Cyl.123 # 5Cyl.126 #6 Cyl.123 do you think a decarb will raise enough or can i run engine with a 20lb plus difference? or i am looking at big problem's

Hard to say without knowing what it was before storage. Run some Seafoam thourgh it or Ringfree and take it out and run it. It still prob needs a impeller, I am sure it has took a set. It could have leaned out before storage due too dirty carbs or air leak. I say run it and check it again.

What year 150 and is it an inline or v6.? I agree that you do need to change the impeller, a cheap preventative measure. Seafoam and easy running after you change the impeller. Do not run it hard, vary the speed as if you are breaking in a new engine. Check the compression again. You need to run it on a boat, not on muffs.

It will be mid 70's, if you post the serial number we can give you the exact year. Basically the same one as on the boat in my avatar. The good news is cyl number 3 is reasonable compression, thats the one that usually takes a beating. One and 2 being low could just be gummed up rings from running too hot, this can happen with a defective water pump impeller. The previous owner may have changed the impeller, however, sitting in one position since 2001 the impeller will not be reliable. These things need good cooling and give zero warning for overtemp. Thats why the impeller should be changed.
These engines do not like to be lugged, make sure your prop allows you to spin over 5000 rpm at WOT. You don,t say what kind of boat it is on, if you can give us an idea we can point you to a prop choice.

Looks like a good match for your boat. Remember, the outboards in the 70,s were rated differently than the ones in 86, so that outboard would be the equivalent of a 90 hp by todays standards. Check the rating plate on your boat, but I think you will be right on the money. A 17P to a 19P prop will get you in the range you need. Depending on the style of prop you will be able to lift the jack plate to unload the prop and it will still hang in there. I would start with the cavitation plate about 1 inch above the bottom of the boat.

would this hp rating also be dropped down on all engines ? i also have a 1984 evinrude just laying around, if it wont make that much of a difference i wont monkey with it , lot of work if it wont give me more hole shot power and atlest 10mph

OOps, I mean that motor will be like a 120 Hp by todays standards. A 17P will be too small. Should go like stink!
