Ok so i got the new boat yesterday and it had a hummingbird depth finder on it. A wide 128 model. The power lead and transducer wires are broken and damaged about 2 foot down the line. Is it worth repairing? Is it easy enough to fix? I found a 141c at walmart on the clearance area for 160.00 or a cheaper piranahha 170 for 90. Should i look into one of these units. Or repair the wires on the one already installed on the boat? I know the power wires will be easy enough its the transducer i am concerened about. I did hook up the power leads to the battery and it powered up and turned on without any issues. Thanks for the opinions.

Fix it first, then wonder if you want to replace it.

Re: Opinions please

HOW DOES ONE FIX THE TRANSDUCER CABLE? IT LOOKED LIKE A SILVER TUBE. AND I FOUND OUT JUST NOW THAT THE 141C FOR THE PRICE TAG OF 160 DOESNT HAVE A SINGLE THING FOR IT BESIDES THE CONTROL HEAD. I FELT LIKE RIPPING INTO A STORE MANAGER. BUY THE CONTROL HEAD THEN HAVE TO SPEND X AMOUNT ON A BASE AND ALL THE CABLES. BY THE ADMITANCE OF THE MANAGER THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE UNIT IS GOING TO TAKE TO MAKE OPERATIONAL OR IF IT EVEN IS. AND SINCE IT IS A CLEARANCE ITEM THEY WONT TAKE A RETURN ON IT. I OFFERED THEM TO KNOCK IT DOWN A LOT AND I WOULD THINK ABOUT IT. HE SAID WELL SOMEONE WILL BE STUPID ENOUGH TO BUY IT. YOU KNOW I MAY JUST CALL ABOUT THIS TO WALMART HEADQUARTERS. THIS WAS THE SAME GUY THAT TOLD ME TO JUST DEAL WITH THE FACT THAT MY TRUCK SAT IN THE OIL CHANGE BAY FOR 4.5 HOURS AFTER BEING DONE BECAUSE AS I FOUND OUT LATER THEY LOST THE OIL CAP FOR AND O YEA FORGOT THE OIL IN BUT CAUGHT IT AS SOON AS IT STARTED. THE STORE MANAGER DOESNT CARE AT ALL ABOUT WHAT HIS PEOPLE DO. THEY CHANGE STORE MANAGERS ABOUT ONCE A QUARTER IF NOT MORE. BUT I AM DONE RANTING NOW. I MEAN COME ON YOU CANT TELL ME IF IT WORKS WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO BUY THE STUFF TO MAKE IT WORK IF IT WILL AND STILL WANT 25 BUCKS LESS THE STICKER ON THE ORIGINAL SHELF NEXT TO IS ASKING FOR.

SO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL STATEMENT. HOW DO I FIX THE TRANSDUCER CABLE? I THOUGHT ABOUT BUYING A NEW ONE BUT IT IS AS MUCH AS A NEWER LOW END UNIT. NOT EVEN SURE HOW GOOD THIS UNIT IS. I ALWAYS HAVE HAD THE PORTABLE UNITS THAT TAKE D SIZE BATTERIES. THANKS AGAIN AND SORRY IT WAS SO LONG.:mad:

No special kit to fix it, sorry. As far as the transducer cable, it is called a coaxial cable. I assume it has just the outer silver tube and an inner single wire. If so, first slip a short length of small diameter heat shrink over the center wire on one end. Then slip a larger piece of shrink over the whole cable. Then solder the two ends of the center wire together. Slide the small heat shrink over the joint and shrink it. The outer conductor is called a sheild. If you are lucky, it is braided. If so, solder it together as best you can, then cover the whole cable with the final piece of shrink, and shrink it. If the outer conductor is a piece of foil, it should also have a small bare wire with it. Solder those two pieces together and shrink as with the shield. If you have multiple inner conductors, treat them just like the single inner wire. This stuff is realy not too critical for the older transducers. Don't use too hot of an iron. Don't use plumbing solder or plumbing flux. Regular electronic solder and flux are helpful. (Use Sn63 or Sn60 solder if you can get it.) Before you put the heatshrink on the connection, clean the joint with alcohol (or if outdoors, acetone works well). This will remove any slightly acidic flux which will eventually eat away at your wire. BTW, that is why no plumbing flux. That is VERY acidic.

Re: Opinions please

Thank you for the advice I did that this evening except I forgot to put the larger heat shrink over the outside of the wiring, therefore I had to electrically tape it up for the night and will most likely redo it tommorow. However it worked for the test to see if it was even worth repairing. I now have the depth finder saying it has a transducer connectied to it, which before it said it didnt and went into demo mode. O sweet success..... Thanks for all the advice.
