I am looking at an outboard by johnson - 9.9 hp that is 2 stroke. Motor looks very clean with low hours.

1) Is this the same basic 9.9 that has been sold since around 1974 or has it been changed drastically.

2) Any known problems with this motor? I know the older ones from 1974 through 1991 are pretty strong and still running well for most folks.

3) How easy is this to convert to remote and steering?

Thanks for input.

It's a good motor. No reason to be scared of an OMC 9.9hp motor. I have '99 30hp johnson---it's basically the same as the last 15 years of johnson 2-strokes, which is what I wanted. Very reliable.

I can't tell you about the remote stuff.

very similar but with great upgrades, super motor, if properly maintained. find out last time ran for any length of time, last impeller change. these are almost bullet proof.

Follow up question - can this motor be converted up to 15hp with a carb change like the older motors?

I'm about to perform this upgrade soon, but it's not just the carb. If you bring in more air and fuel, you need to let the engine exhale that larger volume also, so you have to look at the exhaust too. If you run stock reed valves, there's a small shim you need to use, but if you use Boyesen aftermarket reed valves, there's no need for the shim.

Required reading: http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Ramblings.html - scroll down to the bottom to see the Johnson links, the conversion is discussed in the "Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 / 15 hp Info & Normal Repairs 1974 - 1992" section.

If you want a 15, why not just buy a 15? I'll bet you would get off a lot cheaper and a lot less work.
