MY 2000 225 OPTIMAX HAS THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM: WHEN ON PLANE AT A LITTLE BETTER THAN HALF TRIM AND AT 4000RPM OR SO THE BOAT WILL,
ON ITS OWN, SURGE FROM ABOUT 40MPH TO 45MPH. IT ALSO SURGES AT A LITTLE OVER IDLE SPEED. WHEN IT DOES IT THE ANGLE OF TRIM DOESNT SEEM TO BE A FACTOR. THE LOCAL DEALER HAS CHECKED WITH MERCURY AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE ONLY THING THAT COULD CAUSE THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE FUEL GETTING INTO THE CRANKCASE. THEY SAY WHAT I NEED IS A NEW TRACKER VALVE. THIS CONFUSES ME BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT IN A DIRECT INJECTION ENGINE FUEL NEVER GOT INTO THE CRANK CASE. I MEAN HOW COULD IT?

You really need to do a puter print out and look closely as to what is what, and go from there.

Re: OPTIMAX SURGE

PUTER HOOKUP ETC HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE. WHEN WE TAKE IT TO OUR DEALER THEY SAY NOTHING SHOWS UP AS A FAULT. I DONT KNOW IF THAT WOULD BE A FAULT THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC PUTER WOULD CATCH. ANYWAY THEY COULDNT FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS CAUSING THE PROB SO THE CALL MERC AND THATS WHO CAME UP WITH THE TRACKER VALVE.

A quality battery with good clean terminals ends, solve alot of problems with these DFIs.Recently the battery requirements have been upgraded since your model.Anyway ,one area to think about.

Re: OPTIMAX SURGE

THATS INTERESTING AND I WILL CHECK IT OUT BUT IM PRETTY SURE THAT THE BATS ARE GOOD.IM STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT A TRACKER VALVE IS AND WHY OR HOW ANY FUEL COULD GET INTO THE CRANKCASE OF AN ENGINE WHERE THE FUEL CHARGE IS DIRECTLY INJECTED TO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER. IN OTHER WORDS DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT OR AM I BEING FED A LINE OF POOP. I GUESS WE WILL SEE WHEN WE GET IT BACK FROM THE SHOP. CROSS YOU FINGERS FOR ME.

Re: OPTIMAX SURGE

AKU, the tracker valve helps control fuel press relative to air pressure, 90 psi fuel, 80 psi air...that 10 psi difference is the tracker's resposibility...if the tracker diaphram fails, fuel is allowed into the air side of the injector rail, the cylinders will try to burn it, but any that makes it to the air regulator can get dumped into the bottom of the intake plenum. if they put a set of guages on it to check pressure you would know if the tracker is ok, besides, the motor would run like crap if it was failed...just because the 'puter said there were no faults doesnt mean it isnt a electronic management problem...

Re: OPTIMAX SURGE

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE ODDDI! AT LEAST THINGS ARE STARTING TO MAKE ALITTLE BIT OF SENSE. THE OTHER THING ABOUT THIS ENGINE THAT I FIND A BIT DISSAPPOINTING IS THAT IT DOSENT WANT TO STAY RUNNING ON INITIAL STARTUP. IT USUALLY TAKES 4 TO 5 CRANKS ON THE STARTER BEFORE IT WILL STAY RUNNING. WE PUMP THE BALL BEFORE WE DO ANYTHING. I HAVE FOUND THAT IF I TURN THE KEY TO THE ON POSITION BEFORE I AM BACKED TNTO THE WATER IT SEEMS TO DO BETTER. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD US NOT TO USE THE FAST IDLE PART OF THE CONTROLS ON THIS ENGINE BECAUSE IT WILL AFFECT THE TPI INDICATER?????IS THAT TRUE??

Re: OPTIMAX SURGE

Yes, aku, it is...the puter looks at the throttle position indicator every time you turn the key on...now if you have the throttle partly open [or a throttle cable that is not hitting the stop] the puter accepts the voltage as the idle setting...but after the engine is running and you return the throttle to 'closed' the puter doesnt see a voltage that equals 0% to 100%throttle opening , but less than zero%, and it acts very confused, including putting in fault codes for a bad throttle position indicator, even though its working fine!
Have ALL the updates been done to this engine? seem to remember a computer/calibration change just for start/stall....
