on my 1969 chrysler 45hp model 4545 i have a single orange wire coming out of the thermostat that goes to the terminal block on the port side of the engine and goes to an orange wire in the main harness all the way up to the key switch but at the key switch the orange wire is cut and not connected to anything. what is that wire for?

If you are referring to the thermal sensor on the head, usually the orange wire goes to the overheat buzzer.

If you want to connect an overheat buzzer or a 12 volt indicator light (PEP BOYS, Radio Shack, etc.) You attach one lead from the indicator to the "I" or "A" terminal on the switch. The other lead is attached to the cut orange wire.

The indicator will come on if the engine overheats yet you will be able to silence an annoying buzzer by turning the switch to off.
