I have been searching for a spare prop for my yamaha 50 trla 2 stroke. The prop on it has no markings to identify it. I have contacted the dealer i purchased the boat from and the say yamaha suggests using a 10 x 15 prop. The orignal yamaha prop is 150.00 plus shipping. The closest thing i cab find here at iBoats is a quick silver prop that is 1/8 of an inch larger than what yamaha suggests. Is thia a good prop or should i just go with the factory stuff?
Many Thanks
Tom

Re: Orignal equipment or aftermarket?

there are many excellent aftermarket props, some are made for oem use. finding the correct size and pitch is what is critical. T have been playing with different prop setups on my wellcraft for two years still looking for the best performance and fuel econemy.

Don't be concerned about diameter. If the prop is intended for your motor the diameter will be correct.
Did you look under the prop nut for numbers? The important thing is to evaluate your present performance
and select a prop best suited for your setup.Answer the questions in the stickys at the top of the prop forum
and we can get you setup.

Re: Orignal equipment or aftermarket?

Thanks for all the input. I was able to determine the size and pitch of my current prop. It is a 11x12.5 according to a program i found online http://www.propellerhub.com/ I'll give my best shot at answering the questions in the stickies above.
Question 1 I'm not really trying to correct any problems. This is my first boat so i have nothing to compare it to. It seems to run just fine.
Question 2 My current prop is an aluminum 3 blade Michigan wheel
Question 3 Current diameter is 11" pitch is 12.46" so i would guess it's a 12.5
Question 4 I have no idea what the WOT rpm's are because the boat has no tach. Fastest i have had it according to the speed on the fish finder is 23 mph and i had plenty of throttle left. Average load is me and wife, cooler, tank of gas 11 gallons, 4 fishing rods (500 lbs)
Question 5 The engine is a 2002 yamaha 50trla 2 stroke
Question 6 Boat is a 2003 G3 V167C 16' 7" http://www.g3boats.com/Angler_V167_C_-_Economical_Multi-Species_Aluminum_Deep_V_Fishing_Boat

So that should just about do it. All i am doing is looking for a spare prop. Maybe i'm making this harder than it needs to be.
Many Thanks
Tom

Re: Orignal equipment or aftermarket?

You did very well with your info. For a spare prop a calculator may be ok but I wouldn't trust it for a primary prop.
Have you looked under the prop nut for your numbers?
Unfortunately without your wide open throttle rpm and speed by gps we can't tell if your setup is right.
It very likely is within recommended numbers but now is the time to improve things if you want.
A tinytach is about $47 and can be used on almost any motor. Some cell phones have a gps app.

Tinytach looks interesting. Next time i get the boat in the water i'll take my car gps to record speed.
