Got my exhaust manifolds in.. Got a great deal on them.. :)

Heres the deal.. Anyone ever put these thing on? Seems like they want ya to run the inlet for the water from the rear, when my originals came in from the front. Also. They say not to use a Teflon pipe sealant on the plugs.. OK what to you seal em with then(can ya get it at the auto parts store?).. PO used teflon tape all over this thing.. Any recommendations would be appreciated..

If I do have to plum in from the rear.. What would be a good route for the hoses?

Most generic manifolds I have seen have the same water locations as factory drilled and taped. all the ones not used are plugged. Install like factory and plug the rest. I use a teflon plumbers past on all my fittings

Ayuh,... Use teflon type pipe dope, available at any Hardware Store...

And,.. Read the instructions, rather than lookin' at the pictures...
It says to plumb 'em as per the engine manufacturers recomendations......

well the instructions got confusing talking about filling from the lowest point.. So I was making sure it was going to be okay..
As far as the the sealant... READING the instructions it says NOT to use Teflon... I guess I can post a picture for that if needed

is there a sealant out there without Teflon that will work? Does everyone use it anyway?? I use to use it all over tractors and other things... Funny there is not a answer on this question

Yeah... I am painting em right now and picked some paste up at the store... I can't see what it will hurt

they probably mean don't use teflon tape because you can break a casting with it

you would have to spend months or years reading MSDS sheets to make sure every possible sealant contained no teflon
you can seal those fittings with pipe dope (liquid teflon sealant), RTV, Permatex copper, 3M 4200, or just about any other sealant in the world. Or you can just assemble dry. If your fittings are NPTF, they should seal just fine with no sealant. If they are NPT, rust will seal the threads soon enough.

Re: osco replacement for my wing type on 87 OMC COBRA 4.3

Personally I'd use something like the OMC/Bombardier gasket sealer, I've used it on thermostat gaskets and bolts and it keeps the bolts from seizing up even in a raw water (salt) cooled engine...
I have the batwings on my engine too, the ones I put on in 2004 are still good but when I saw the price start to go up I bought an extra set back in 06 and stashed them away, I like the lack of the joint and no worries about leaking mani-to-riser joints which is the Achillies heel of raw water cooled I/Os...
the OSCO conversion looks good, however and if I couldn't have gotten an extra set of the OE manifolds, that's the main option at this point....BTW I was able to get the OE back then for less than what the OSCO conversion typically sells for...

I paid $800 for em.. I am not real trilled about having to deal with the gaskets... I know that's a failure point.. Taking every precaution.. Removed all the paint from those surfaces... My ol batwings been on there the life of the boat.. Thats a pretty good run 24 years
