Hi all, I have a 1993 Johson 120, I have read the relevant posts here re the regulator/rectifier and have done what has been suggested to test it.

With the motor not running the Multimeter read 12.48/12.5 volts, with the motor running at 1500rpm the reading was 13.8/13.9 volts, with the rpm at 2000 the reading was the same, now, while I was testing, the tacho stopped working but the volts remained the same, there was no drop at all in charging volts.

From this can I assume the reg/rec is OK???

What I am led to believe is that there may be a loose/corroded connection in the control box, would this be so??

If so, has anybody pulled one of these things apart, and where do I look for the wire and or connection, and any pitfalls I should aware of when opening it up??

All thoughts appreciated..

Rosscoe

Welcome!!

One real quick easy way to bypass all the wiring is to run a temporary wire fron the grey output lead of the reg/rec to the tack. If you have the tach now you know the reg/rec is OK and there is a break or loose connection from the reg/rec grey output wire forward.

If the tach doesnt work its either the reg/rec or the tach itself.

The needle should jump slightly when the key is turned on indicating the power and ground to the tach is OK.

Re: Other thoughts as to why Tacho stops

Thanks for the quick reply!!

Having had the boat for only a few years I am still finding my way around the engine and am starting to do a few more things myself.

Can you tell me where the reg/rec is located?, I think its below the black box between the V. Is there an easy spot to find the grey out put lead?

Quote: The needle should jump slightly when the key is turned on indicating the power and ground to the tach is OK.

Is this all the time or only when doing this test?

Sorry if my questions sound a bit dumb, but as I said, I'm still finding my way..

Cheers, and thanks again, Rosscoe
