Morning all! This is my first post to this forum since discovering the iboats site two months ago. I am a husband and father of 2 and teach music at a small midwestern University. I grew up on the east coast (NJ....but don't hold it against me!) and was raised in a boating family-have been around them all my life.

I had a meeting in Willmar, MN this past summer and saw a little boat for sale by the roadside, a 14' 1967 Larson All American with a '69 55hp Johnson on the back. On a whim I stopped and looked, long story short, it runs well, was in the family I bought it from for nearly 30 years and is in pretty good shape. I got her for $300, not bad, I think.

We've enjoyed the boat a great deal. Fishing, tubing, etc. The kids are young yet, so the boat is perfect. They think it's the greatest "yacht" in all the world! The wife is happy as zip around the small lakes in our area. That's what it's all about, right?

She needs a floor (a bit spongy in two spots) and some TLC as the white-with-green stripes gelcoat is oxidized, but not too heavily. I have some experience compounding gelcoat but am leaning towards wet-sanding after reading the many generous posts on this forum. Any advice or suggestions regarding the gelcoat are appreciated.

By prying up the floor in spots it seems that the stringers are alright, but having read many threads/posts on this site, I am wary of overconfidence in this assessment until the floor is out entirely. The floor will be replaced this fall. Again, any comments, advice or suggestions regarding this process are enthusiastically appreciated.

Most of the stainless on the boat is in good shape and my family and I plan to back her into our garage and spend the winter polishing and replacing those stainless items that need it. I will also strip and repaint the trailer. New upholstery for the seats I think as well as I have a friend who owes me a favor (several) and his wife is a fine seamstress with experience on this sort of thing.

Will attach some pics as soon as I learn how to do that......

All best,
Russ

Nice find. And a nice 14' boat is a great way to get into boating. Not so big that every fix or change is a major undertaking. And with that 55hp outboard, the Larson should easily run 25-30mph lightly loaded.

Do your homework, keep reading the forums and especially do searches on the topic you are interested in.

Good luck with the resto and don't forget to post some pics!

And welcom to iboats!

Re: Our Little Boat

Welcome to iBoats! Your experience sounds a lot like mine, first time boat owner with young kids, had a great time fishing and tubing this summer too.

If the deck is going bad you should make sure your transom is structurally sound. You might know that already since it sounds like you've done your homework, but I thought it was worth mentioning since you mentioned checking your stringers but not your transom.

Great little boats. My grandfarther had one same year. I belive there is another member that did a resto on a boat just like yours. I would look it up and take a look at his. His thread has many pics and some great info. Good luck with the boat. JP
