out drive help

I recently bought a century with a v8 and a omc 800 outdrive it would not go into gears so I took the lower unit apart and found broken gears in it does this mean that my upper unit would also be broken or how do I check my upper unit with out talking it apart?,

You can probably get a good indication of the condition of the upper housing gears by checking the gear oil.<br /><br />TMD
