I've pulled my out drive and now I'm looking for suggestion on building a stand so i can work on it. Don't want to re-invent the wheel if I don't have to. Thx Dave

Re: out drive stand

What I saw at the shop was a piece of thick plywood with several V shaped notches that allowed them to slip the outdrives in the stand by the lower unit resting on the cavition plate. They mainly used that for storage. It would be easy to build. They did most of their work on a metal stand with two clamps that tighted on the cavitation plate that held it securely when working on one.

Re: out drive stand

This may sound like the hillbilly stand but this is what I did.I had a old lawn mower with a blown engine.I removed engine, which left the hole in frame of mower.I mounted to short pieces of 4x4 over hole, with long bolts, so skegg would just go through it.I then fabricated 2 frames, one for each side of drive from 2x4s.I roll it under drive set skegg in slot, put frame on either side of drive, uses to big clamps to hold frame together on drive, undo drive from boat, then roll it away and work on it.Different type stand but saves my back and I can roll it were i want it.

Yea! I thought about that but haven't figured out a way to couple a Briggs engine to that drive. My wife really got a laugh out of that drive sitting on that mower deck. Her family being boating people also will not stop laughing over it.I just tell her step father you go right ahead and laugh till the next time you need to pull your drive and want to borrow my mower.

Re: out drive stand

I've rigged a stand for out drive, before I seperate upper and lower units so I can replace water pump etc. Is there anything I should look for on out drive for clues to future trouble. There is little rust on U joints. The drive shaft turns freely but the propeller dosen't spin when I turn shaft. Is this normal? Any test suggestion would be appreciated.
Thx Dave

Re: out drive stand

It is if the shift shaft is in the neutral position. If you spin the drive shaft and the shift shaft is rotated all the way forward, the gears should mesh and the prop should spin.

Alpha?
