Out Drive wont do back in HELP!!!!!!

I removed the engine to put a new one in before doing it i put it in foward gear but when I put the out drive back in it seem to be in neutral gear i guess when i moved the shif bracket it slipped into neutral the out drive will not go in i was wonder spec wise i had a 86 4.3 merc engine replaced by a 88 4.3 merc on the whole for the shaft the same my fear is the 88 has a smaller hole for the outdrive shaft and casue it not to go in what am i doing wrong and any tips on the foward gear this if it pop out into neutral and i put the engine back and put it in foward is that bad or good. I ,will look at other post my main concern ,is the 86 to 88 engine difference is the shaft sizes differnt can this info be looked up somewhere ???? whast is the trick to putting it back??? I did use an alignment tool seemed fine i can see the shaft hitting the fly wheel it could be tats its not aligned but i want to make sure so here i ma asking you hoping you have been throug the same

There'll be No differences with your shaft sizes, or couplers spline sizes.....<br />I'd say you don't have it aligned properly..... <br />Just make sure the shifter is in forward, And the outdrive is in forward, for the last inch or so...

thats great news so all i have to do is play with the shifer. Which way is the chrome/metal stub on the out drive pointing to be in forward straight left ??? i think when i moved the shift bracket it came out of forward grear

Shifter Shoe,+ the shiftershaft Foot Should be Straight in line.....<br />Go Borrow the Gimbal Alignment Tool again.... Make Sure you're Lined up properly....<br />If you can see the shaft Hitting the flywheel, Your off more than a little....

ok help me i cannot get it in i have raised the motor a bit wont go in lowed the engine it wont go in the shaft tool is going in and out fine i have the coupler on the outdrive facing straight and the guide on the gimble straight.I put my finger on the shaft where it goes to the motor and it seems dead on it i have even turned the prop a bit thinking the splines were off the shift bar the goes into the outdrive I am ready to pay someone to put this in what the hell im i doing wrong on my boat 1986 the bar that has the shifter cable is supposed to be out all the way in to be in reverse the cable bar should be toward the engine in the gimble

Well, I Don't Know.........<br />Did you Grease everything up real good, So it'll Slide in ????<br /><br />I don't understand about the cable bar..... Everything Should be in Forward.....

I guess i have to pay a machanic Im lost i hope i dont have to pay too much i cant see whats wrong i will try again tonight again i can get the shaft to hit the fly wheel it just wont slide in the last 8 inches ,,, I hope you right and its not a size difference

I got the outdrive in !!! my machanic came by and laughed he said that the alignment tool was not all the way in so we were able to jam it all the way in and showed me that the engine needed to be lowerd a 1/4 inch but it was sitting on the adjustment bolt so i lifted the engine and took out the adjustment nut that the engine sat on and lowered the engine and the alignemnt tool went all the way in yeaaaaa!! then i picked up the out drive and it slide all the way in !!!!!! Im done with the engine install will start the boat and pray that the used motor I put in is ok and sell the dam boat!!!

Bondo... I saw the same problem somewhere else on this forum and suggested the following: Use the free alignment tool that is right there - and the most accurate one - the outdrive yolk. Five minutes to press out the bearings, line up the engine (however long that would take, depending on how far off the current alignment is) and another ten to reassemble the yolk unless you have dropped a needle bearing somewhere (use a wad of grease).

The "Webmaster" didn't put up anything. At the bottom of the page is posts with a similar title. This is done automatically by a computer. The reason is, is that it may be similar to your question and you could READ it, you don't have to reply to it, Gee, look at the dates. In reallity, anything over a week old is probably old stuff and likely the original poster has the problem fixed. But 3 or 4 years....................

im guessing the fact that the original poster later said "i got it on, thanks guys for all the help" wasn't closure enough for the thread, leaving some confused as to the outcome
