Out/In Board vs. Jet

I am looking at buying a Jet boat for my family. I have grown up with both out and in board boats. I've never owned a jet boat or maintained one. The boat I'm looking at is a Yamaha LX210 .

Any insight as to pros and cons of the Jetdrive type boat?

Thank you.

Pro... You can run in shallow water compared to most other boats. You won't wreck any props.

Con... The water intake can get obstructed if there is a lot of seaweed, grass, trash, etc. in the water. I once saw a guy diving under his jet boat to make sure his water intake was clear. He suspected something was blocking it.

Good Luck!

Re: Out/In Board vs. Jet

WannaBoat
Been bumming arounnd reading on it. Well I also have watched guys swimming under them to un plug the intake but Yamaha it seems has corrected that problem.

Jet Pump Clean-out Plugs with Push Button - Allows for direct access to the inlet duct cavity to easily clear any debris from the pumps from inside the boat.

I've been running a outboard with a pump for 13 years and just love it. Had to take my friends prop I/O out the other day, hated the idea that I had that big ole twirly thing chewing everything up. (I've been spoiled :) )

PRO:
Safer for water sports

It only draws 18" of water at the stern.. means that on a lot of lakes you could have the bow right at dry land to load people and back out.

Easier to maneuver around in tight marina's.. you can swing the stern inches from other boats and pilings without a prop hitting anything

If you swing it bow first in the drive way and hook the hose to it you can wash your neighbors car accross the street in his driveway

CON:

You do loose a little speed but with that setup you won't notice it.

In some lakes around here we have a weed thingie that grows in the water. (tried to look it up but couldn't find the name) but anyway jet pumps don't like it! Your motor will rev up but you can not plane.

Mabe someone can think some of other things.
-----------------------------------------------

On the boat and motor's.. don't know a thing about them but I liked what I read. haha was thinking of another boat that claims through bolt SS construction and even has cut outs at boat shows.. well they do around the transom only where the customer can see.. after that it's all pop rivits!

Dry weight is only 2150..about 2500 with fuel. pretty good for a 21 ft boat. It ought to scream!

If its a tube frame trailer I would go for the up grade to Galv. Esp if used in salt! Painted steel tube trailers rot from the inside out.. if it's a I beam then you can keep it painted and protected and wash it off.

Oh if you do buy one you will learn to really like and learn to love having seperate controls for throttle and shifting! :) :) If you ask for a demo they will no doubt give ya the ride of your life! Whoa! I thought we were going the other way just a 1/2 second ago! :D

Now I do have two questions for you as I couldn't find the answers.

A: What do they claim for top end speed?
B: Does it have just one control for both motors or do they each have a throttle and shift?

Link

Two differant animals, jet boats only turn under power. If you plan on skiing, my experience is that props spin through the water and jets push the water back at you. The wake is awful. Check the resale on this Yamadog. They are much safer

WOW. Thank you for this insight. I just happened to stumple on this sight and its GREAT! :)

I apreciate the comments. Something I didn't think about is skiing as mentioned by tylerin. When I test drive this thing I will need to watch for that. I like skiing and would not want to miss that.

Link: You're right you seemed to switch during your con. I guess thats a good thing. I've only done a little bit of research. For the value this seems like a great deal. It comes with everything (bimini top, dry cover, anchor, trailer, etc). As to top speed and control I don't see that either.

Where or how would I beable to check the resale value? Although I've always been around boats I have not owned one myself.

I've heard stories about steering in the marina being difficult as well as the intake being a pain. As to the intake I view it as a prop. Seems the intake is easier to clean than trying to untist a rope from a prop (done that before :D ). We've had jet ski's for a few years and haven't had any real problems with those. Although the weed problem is a big one at the main lake I use, Havasu AZ.

Thanks for the replies this is great!

I'm not saying you won't be able to ski. For me the quality of skiing isn't there. As for resale check the boat buys for new and used, then you'll see price differntial. You'll get used to the steering, just have to practice. These boats are basiclly wave runners on steroids w/ (2) three cylynder oil injected motors instead of one.

Thanks tylerin. I like your description "wave runners on steroids" :D

You bring up a great point that I did not think about. I enjoyed skiing in my youth and would like to ski again. I haven't ski'd in many years and would need a nice wake with two ski's to do it. Its something to think about.

Thanks again. :)

2 skis? You only need one. I ski right up river from you at a place called Park Moabi by Topoc bridge. Good fishing to. Can't see one of these w/ a fishing pole in it. They look like they would rock back and forth alot just moving around in it.

I've launched from there before. I like the lake more so than the river. Its MUCH colder up there. Down in havasu the water is 82 degrees! Gotta love that!

Not when they're 3 ft swells I don't. Give me the cool glass over choppy warm water. Besides its 120 degrees when you get out anyway. Good luck

WannaBoat

Hey I didn't wander on the con:
Just forgot to put a line when I got off the subject :) Anyway I went back and did a edit and put it in.
tylerin : Brought up a several good points.
One being 2 ski's ??? I thought the second one was a back up! :D But I had not thought of sking at all. Thats something you will have to check out in person. The I/O I mentioned earlier that I took out is a 19' 1969 model and by todays standards isn't worth tieing a rope on to for sking. Almost any boat is a compromise in one form or another.

tylerin said: "These boats are basiclly wave runners on steroids w/ (2) three cylynder oil injected motors instead of one"

HaHa I was thinking the same thing last night when I was reading about it but just couldn't think of the right words! :)

He also brought up steering "You'll get used to the steering, just have to practice."

I sure missed the boat on that one! (pun intended)
At slow (no wake) and trolling speeds.. Hearding cats is easier than making a jet boat go in a straight line! :(
However a trolling motor takes care of that problem... speaking of which where are you going to put the trolling motor and rod holders ??
And it didn't mention a live well??

Keep us posted
Link
