out of alignment?

Changing the bellows on a SX drive. Put in alignment tool and it does not slide all the way in. I was not having any problems this summer, but it states it should easily slide in. I have not tried to force it or shake it around due to fear of damaging bearing. Is there anything I should do before trying to adjust the motor mounts? I see something about checking the gimbal bearing alignment but do not know how to check that. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Did it go in far enough to get any grease tracks from the splines? to align the gimbal just slide the bar in and tap it on all four axis points but make sure it's all the way seated first. once thats done your more than likely gonna have to adjust the motor mounts that is if the coupler will not recieve the bar at all if it does and you do get grease tracks from the spline follow them to adjust the motor mounts.

Put some force on the tool to get it in. Don't hammer it in, but with your hands, give it a good push. Then when its in you have a baseline and can start the alignment process.

Re: out of alignment?

When was the last time the drive was off and the alignment checked. I have seen them after 5 or more years have the grease so dried and hard on the splines that you couldn't pust the alignment bar in. But, since the drive slid off easily, I had to use the alignment bar with some gentle tapping into the splines a little at a time, and adding grease and removing, all to get the old grease out. Then the aligment bar went in perfectly and no alignment was necessary.
I was shown this procedure a long time ago, and it's kind of a judgement call as to weather you should try it or not. If it really is out of alignment and you tap the bar in, you may not get it back out.

Re: out of alignment?

got it in a little, splines are on top of tool, sounds like it is time to adjust. Why would it be this far out?

Hummm, motor mounts may have settled, or motor mount bolts may not be tight. Stringers or transom may have rotted and have settled a bit. You said this is a trailer boat, but unless you bought it new, there may have been water intrusion at some earlier time. All it takes is once with the water, and the rot begins...

I know man, I think things just settle a bit after time - fiberglass, wood flexes. Based on your description of the markings on the alignment tool I would start adjusting your motor mounts up - probably one full turn at a time. You will be jumping in and out of your boat a whole lot. A second person helps.

Before you get started on that I would probably make sure the gimbal bearing is well seated to make sure you are aligning properly. This is a delicate thing you may or may not need to do and you definitely don't want to damage it. Personally and I am certainly no expert, I tapped the outer race only with an appropriate tool of my chosing at the 12, 6, 3, and 9 o'clock positions in that order. Obviously, they make a special tool for this, but most of us don't have mass amounts of $$ to afford these. A socket having the same diameter as the outer race would be the next best thing. Never hit the inner race. If you're confident it's seated you're good to go.

Start your alignment adjustments and once that thing starts sliding in and out like you know what you're almost done. Make a mark on your crankshaft pulley with some whiteout, pull your sparkplugs, and turn your crankshaft 1/2 turn and recheck it again. You may very well be doing more adjustments, but at this point I would be making 1/4 -1/2 turns on my adjusment nuts. Keep checking the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions using your one whiteout mark until that tool slides in and out easily in all positions. Then lock it in place with the nuts on the other side of the mounts and check again. Then, you're done. Good luck.
