Outboard as backup

Does anyone recommend carrying an outboard motor on an I/O boat as backup propulsion in case the main engine won't run for some reason?

I was curious if a small outboard or possibly a Torqeedo 1003 electric motor would be good enough to limp back to shore. I mostly boat on rivers where I can see both shorlines. My boat is a 21' cuddy that probably weighs about 3800lbs.

On my little 14' boat, a small electric trolling motor has saved me a couple of times when my 15HP wouldn't start.

I have thought about it, but there are practical and safety limitations as to what can be done. I/O boats are really not conducive to such an arrangement, whereas bass boats, center console boats, etc. are so and often have an auxiliary motor for trolling that can serves as a back up to the main engine.

My boating consists of 8-10 miles from shore on the Great Lakes, or on the Niagara River, just above Niagara Falls. In the latter case, if the anchor didn't hold for some reason, fat chance boat us tow could get to you in time.

To answer your question, I consider it mandatory safety equipment. I wouldn't own a boat without one.

My brand spanking new I/O failed due to factory defects twice in the first 2 years. Covered by warranty, yeah, so what. My kicker got me home safe in both cases. Other than that i have never had a motor fail and never needed a tow. And yes, I carry boat us insurance as well.

Forget an electric. Its ok for fishing but not for safety. Buy a gas powered OB in a size that will at least maintain your hull speed.
