Hello,
I have a small 14ft Klamath Jon Boat with a 15 hp Evinrude. I have noticed some people trailer with their outboards down and some do it with outboards up/tilted.

When mine is down I have one foot of clearence from ground to the bottom skag.

I'm new to this trailering as I used to keep this boat on the water all the time.

Thanks,
Mike.

One foot is pretty close if you pass through a rain gutter or back up a slightly steep or curbed driveway.

I'd run with it up.

Hi Mike, If you have ample clearance, I would trailer with the Motor down. This eliminates any stress on the Tilt system.(from trailer bouncing etc.) I would say 1 foot road clearance is ample.
John

I suggest up but not resting on your tilt mechanism which can break on rough roads (like mine did). Use a wooden block as a spacer and then taut bungee cords over the leg to hold the leg down against the block. Then it will flex against the bungee cords when the trailer bounces and otherwise rest on the wood block.

if you have a foot or so ,,it'll be fine thats about what i have & it's fine .. up just seems like to much leverage bouncin' on the transom..

This has been a source of confusion for me also. I have a high HP engine, both my Yamaha and Merc manuals (especially Yamaha) were quite ambiguous. Both engines have supports when you trim the engine all the way up, if these are not to be used for trailering, what is their purpose. Yamaha said to use the supports, Merc recommends not using them.

i can't help you there .. but if you have room ,, then why raise the motor ?? if you have room.. it's like carrying a heavy load with arms outstreched or carry it close to your body ... it makes sense to me...

Crab Bait,
I agree, but the maual says not to rely on the hydraulics for support....Huh. How is the fishing in DE? Thinking of going to Port Mahon for trout.

On this same note, I have a 100hp v4 on my transom and I was wondering what to do here, previous I always left the old motor down, this time I have less then 6 inches clearance and need to put it up..

that means I need some sort of support from the trailer up to the leg just under the cav plate???

what do you guys do? I could make something up easily enough I guess.. but is it necessary?
also, the outboard has a tilt lock that takes the load of the hydrolics at tilt.. but that puts the load on the transom and if I go over a big bump, thats alot of load at a bad angle..

rgds

Frank

Franki,

that's my exact question. It really isn't clear what to do based on the information in the manual. What is the purpose of the bracket?

If your motor doesn't have enough clearance Buy a transom saver made by Swivel-Eze and found at Academy, Wal-Mart and most places that sell boating supplies. Can be used on the smallest outboard to the very biggest.A U-shaped end fits on tralior roller or back part of tralior other end is V-shaped with cushions thats fits under cavitation plate, held on with bungy straps. This supports motor in up position takes stress off transom and is ajustable, around $25 to $35 dollars, depending on motor size.

Cabela's has a real nice transom saver on sale now. $36.95 if I remember correctly.

Also remember that most of the weight of an outboard is the engine itself, which is on the top. When you tilt the motor up, the heaviest part is in *front* of the transom, balancing it out.

I know this is not my post, but I basically have the same question.

Is the recommendation is to use a transom saver. my current trailer configuration does not allow for the use of one, so before I modify it to allow the use of one. I would personlly like to hear a defintie yes. :D

Re: Outboard Down or Up when trailering? small boat & outboard

I think with a 15hp motor, I would trailer with it up and use a transom saver -- They work well. For a bigger (i.e., heavier) motor, though, I like trailering with it in the vertical postion if at all possible. The leg on an 85hp Evinrude, or similar, is a real chunk.

There is often no choice because of ground clearance, of course. I would definitely use a transom saver if trailering a big motor in the tilted position, and block it up as well (tilt locks always look pretty flimsy to me).

just opinions....

Thanks all you guys. I don't think we have come up with a solution. I don't feel so stupid.

Re: Outboard Down or Up when trailering? small boat & outboard

i didn't go ck that link raoul. not because i know it all, just wanted to give my personal thoughts here.
this topic like most, is a dead horse, on the 2nd beating....(jokin here)
this is one that will never be agreed upon. just remember that most motors are heavy, bouncing vs dead weight is the main issue. and ground clearance. so if you feel 1ft is enough clearance for all but a stupid driver error, go with down. its better on eliminating the 'bounce' issue. if you're concerned about never having to worry about the bottom of the motor(skeg) hitting pavement, then tilt it up. if you want to travel 'up', then use a block of wood OR use a transom saver. that is another debated issue. a lever(chunk of wood)may/may not be hard on the hinge point of the tilt, but for sure a transom saver helps. but it costs more, takes more time to put on.
cheapest solution=down, and you got alot of clearance in my opinion, like others said. i use a transom saver. on the little stock latch, from what i've read and considered, i honestly believe this is a feature for emergency/maintenance situations like when working on the motor/tilt motor. kinda like using a stock bumper jack on the old cars vs puttin a floor jack under it.
HTH
