Re: Outboard Down or Up when trailering? small boat & outboard
i didn't go ck that link raoul. not because i know it all, just wanted to give my personal thoughts here.
this topic like most, is a dead horse, on the 2nd beating....(jokin here)
this is one that will never be agreed upon. just remember that most motors are heavy, bouncing vs dead weight is the main issue. and ground clearance. so if you feel 1ft is enough clearance for all but a stupid driver error, go with down. its better on eliminating the 'bounce' issue. if you're concerned about never having to worry about the bottom of the motor(skeg) hitting pavement, then tilt it up. if you want to travel 'up', then use a block of wood OR use a transom saver. that is another debated issue. a lever(chunk of wood)may/may not be hard on the hinge point of the tilt, but for sure a transom saver helps. but it costs more, takes more time to put on.
cheapest solution=down, and you got alot of clearance in my opinion, like others said. i use a transom saver. on the little stock latch, from what i've read and considered, i honestly believe this is a feature for emergency/maintenance situations like when working on the motor/tilt motor. kinda like using a stock bumper jack on the old cars vs puttin a floor jack under it.
HTH
