How important is the seal between the engine & cowl?? I have a 115HP johnson (1978) and notice a gap(aprox 1/8"wide & 1"long) in areas around the corners & the backside of the cowling. Are new gaskets avalable???
Thanks
Jim

No! this will not cause a problem, such as changing the fuel-air mixture. If the cosmetic look bothers you, I would replace the seal.

Hi,
It could help a little (not much but some) to reduce the noice if it is tight seal between engine and cowl. Try running an outboard without and then with cowl and You will understand.

/Bo

Hey,

It would matter if the motor is on a bracket like mine...whenever I come off a plane the wake has a tendancy to wash against the back of the motor...if that seal wasn't tight then I would flood the engine with salt water.

Just a thought.

I'd put a new seal on it. The less water that gets in there, the better! Dealer should have it or be able to order it ;)

Hello.
Out in the salty water with waves crashing in from the back, you do not want any salt water to get under your cowling if you can help it.It is a very bad experience to have an engine konk out on you when you really need it, because the water is shorting or grounding it out.
Keep that thing sealed if you can!!
