outboard engine troubles

recently purchased a 1986 50 hp force.. The motor starts easily, but will only idle. As soon as the throttle is engaged it dies unless the choke is held closed. I cleaned the carb and fuel filter but it did'nt help. Any suggestions?

Howdy R.J.,<br />Welcome to iboats.<br />Have you tried pumping the pressure bulb when trying to acclerate? If it picks up and runs, good chance you've got a fuel pump problem. Give that a try and get back and lettus know.<br /><br />C/6<br /><br />Hooty

Sounds like you may not have cleared the jets of debris.
