is the vent supposed to be open or closed when starting and running an outboard? This is embarrasing as I have been boating 40 years and I still dont know this. Doesnt seem to hinder operation either way. Anyone? Thanks

Re: outboard fuel tank vent question

Assuming we aren't talking about a pressure tank here, the vent should be open. When you suck gas out of the tank, air must be able to get in to replace it. If it can't, then eventually there will be such a vacuum in the tank that you can't suck any more gas out. That takes awhile, which is why you don't see any difference right away.

Take an empty soda bottle and suck real hard on it. Note that the sides cave in. No vent -- no fuel to the engine. If the engine runs with the vent open or closed, then the vent is bad or there is an air leak somewhere.
