Outboard identification & questions

I recently aquired a sailboat for free that has been sitting for over ten years. It came with an engine which I believe to be an evinrude. Luckily, the engine was covered and with a quick cleaning of the carburator...she started right up. Electric start and I believe its the 'sail' model.

Any idea on model/year/hp???
Model # E10SELCID
Serial # E0001002

Also, does this have a charging circuit? If so...where are the connections. The only two wires that run out of the engine are for the starter (it was ran to a button in the cockpit of the sailboat). I thought it would have a charging circuit but not sure how I would go about finding the leads.

Thanks for the help...

Re: Outboard identification & questions

Welcome to iboats. as to the charging circuit, i do not know. it is a 1981 10hp, manuals here"http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=models.main&year=1981&ID=104944"
you definately need to put a water pump kit in it, before running again, no point in burning it up. you can look up engine diagrams and parts list at, Brp-evinrude, literature, engine diagrams.

The model number indicates 10hp, but it is actually 9.9hp. It's a long story.
It charges through the battery cables, no extra wires required. But those cables have to go direct to the battery. The way they hooked it up has probably blown the rectifier. Wonder how they handled the start button on the motor? Oh Well....

Re: Outboard identification & questions

Thanks guys. Yea, I was planning on putting a new water pump in...it didn't seem to be pumping very good. It was inconsistant when pumping...sometimes a bunch of water, sometimes none. I didn't run it much at all.

As for the charging, I'm confused to how its normally hooked up. Right now, the enigine had both the start button and stop button removed, they had longer leads put in place to run them to the cockpit. The two leads that run out for the starter botton run out of where I think the button was once mounted on the engine. One lead runs to ground, the other lead runs to the starter I believe (the hot-starter wire is the green wire in the pic). So where would the battery cables run to on the engine? Assuming the start and stop button are wired correctly (just elongated to reach the cockpit), where do the 'battery cables' run to??

If the start and stop buttons were in there original place...would there be two other leads coming out of the engine for battery charging? If so, where do these leads connect inside the engine? (I really think the start/stop buttons are wired correctly, just moved off the engine...if so...where are my battery cables??)

the hot from battery to solenoid. bottom of solenoid to post on starter, the ground to the engine block. the start button wires run from the solenoid, to switch back to the solenoid to activate the solenoid. the stop button, grounds out the spark to the coils so the engine quits.

Re: Outboard identification & questions

Thanks so much for all the input!

Ok, whats the trick to getting the lower unit off? Do I really have to take the carb and pully rewinder off to take the pin for the foward/reverse shaft out. I think that shaft isn't letting me pull the whole lower unit off but I couldn't imagine they have you take all that off just to get at the water pump.
I took all the bolts off the lower unit and it slid out about two inches...then it stoped. What else do I have to do? (unfortunately the diagrams aren't loading on my computer so I can't look). Do I have to take the upper bolts off on the lower section? Is there a place where the shift shaft couples somewhere so I don't have to take it off under the carb?

thanks in advance...

I believe you need to disconnect the shift rod from the shift rod connector on your motor. You will have to remove a screw from the shift rod connector to let it drop. It is trickier getting it hooked back up than it is removing it. Dont adjust the shift rod either while it is down, the tolerances are tight on it. Here is a link to the diagram. GOod luck.

Yea, I ended up taking off the pull start mechanism and the carb to get at the pin that connects the shift rod to the shift handle. Then everything slid out fine...just didn't think they would design it like that but oh well. Its off. thanks.
