Second time this has happened. My merc 175 outboard, 92'model will start, idle low 650rpm and run but max rpm under load is 1700. 36 months ago this identical thing happened and the mechanic said the power pack was defective. The motor ran fine in the morning. I started it to go out in the afternoon and the problem occured. If it is the power pack, what made it go out again. voltage high.........any suggestion welcome. Is this easy to change myself??
thanks
gary

Powerpacks are easy to change. You will have to find out which one if any are giving you trouble.

I would think that if the pack lasted for 3 years. It did not fail for the same reason the old one did. It would have failed much sooner.

It is also possible that the stator has failed.

You will need a DVA meter to test these parts.

TMD

Those motors (V-6) have two switch boxes..

Maybe it's the other one that has failed?

Scott..
