Outboard in gear or not ?

I am going to start my Johnson 33hp 1967 for the first time and i just wanna make sure that i dont start it in gear ? How can you tell if it in gear or not ? Anyother tips regarging gear selection will be good !<br /><br />Thank you

Prop spins freely with motor off - you're in neutral. Shift lever would be vertical...<br />- Scott
