went out on a buddies boat with a similar engine to mine and noticed his seemed to be sitting up higher. his water intakes on his 75hp were only about an inch under water. i noticed when we would do a 1/2 throttle turn one "intake" was open to air. i mentioned something about it and he shrugged it off.should he be concerned about it or is that normal? i believe his motor is an '81. we were just testing it and never went very far.

Hey! Are you his mother or his friend? If he doesn't care, why bust his chops and make bad feelings? You did your friendship duty by mentioning it to him and now it is his responsibility to decide what to do.

In most cases, the cavitation plate should be no more than an inch above the bottom of the keel (motor in down position). Hang on to your motor....he just might be in the market for one:rolleyes:

Are you sure that's the water intake? What year motors are we talking about here? Late model 75s with the water intake on the side of the gearcase, just above the bullet, would have trouble holding the water if the motor was high enough to allow one of the holes to surface. There are other holes, above the AV plate that are actually water and exhaust relief holes. Are you referring to them?

especially if you are on board.

I wouldn't think that a momentary loss of some water to the pump will do any harm. Often when a motor is set too high (or trimmed too high) the motor will cavitate (grab air) and over-rev, which can be bad for the motor, too. Did it scream or lose power on the turn?

You should also point out to him that his hull numbers are crooked.
