I have an exisisting 15' Fiberglass Tri-Hull Runabout with a '76 70HP Evinrude engine with a prop. I now live on a river with some shallow areas and would like to keep my existing boat/motor and use it on the river. I am considering changing/converting the lower unit to a Jet for the river which still allows me the option still use the lower unit/prop if I want to later use it on the deeper lakes. I know there is about a 30% drop in power, but is this combination a bad or good idea with this boat motor combination?

Nothing wrong with that idea. There are plenty of outboard jets units still around for that model. I will check when I get home and get you the jet model # that you need.

Thank You! I mainly wanted to be sure that the 15' Runabout fiberglass boat wouldn't be to heavy for the 70HP motor with a Jet system.

If there are any used ones out there or good deals on these I'm all ears!

From my chart, it looks like you need a model L60 for a 15" shaft or a L60L for a 20" shaft. Don't know where you are at. For a new unit, or recommendations you can call

Specialty Mfg Co
Outboard Jets
2035 Edison Avenue
San Leandro, CA 94577
(510) 562-6049

They are the only people who make these units. Good folks and lots of information. New ones run about $1500.00, but there a lot of used units around here, normally for less than half of that. Let me know if I can help more..

Kev_Alask***

Sharble...I've toyed with the idea of changing back and forth from jet to prop...the changeover is simple but the motor height is about 5" higher for the jet (if memory serves me correctly). So my solution is to buy another moter and interchange the whole outboard. A 70hp jet on a 15' f/g trihull would be a little sluggish...therefore it would ride deeper in the water but would still allow you to boat in water less than a foot deep I think...at least no prop to damage in shallow water...just a Thought
