That hardly puts them in an elite group. Of course they've sold weapons to Iraq. Everybody who has weapons to sell has sold weapons to Iraq. Heck, the UNITED STATES has sold weapons to Iraq.

I believe Bassman is right Flathead. If I recall right, back when Iran an Iraq was feuding, the good ol' USA backed Iraq with weapons simply because at the time Iran was on our Sh*t List. But I don't think the US ever sold them high tech stuff or the ability to build them like Russia and France.

well, i'm not a political afficianado, but i think we can assume a higher level of concern when they're providing the eqmt during our military involvement against the ones they're providing eqmt to! <br /><br />maybe i'm ignorant, but were we helping iraq fight against russia and iran at the same time?<br /><br />not to mention that russia is now (supposedly) a country considered our ally, not the other superpower communistic mortal enemy of america...

Ebb my thoughts exactly, Russia had agreeded to disarm saddam along with the rest of the UN. not provide this country with weapons. Kinda reduntant dont ya think.

I know I should leave this alone, but I'm going to jump in one more time. <br /><br />When were supporting Iraq against Iran, the Russians were also supporting Iraq against Iran. That's when Iraq got their Migs and SCUDs. The French were also supporting Iraq against Iran. That's when Iraq got the Mirages. Germany and others were also in there. Everybody was supporting Iraq, mainly because everybody wanted to be on Saddam's good side when the oil concessions were handed out.<br /><br />The country we supported against Russia was Afganistan. That's back when Osama bin Laden was considered a freedom fighter.<br /><br />"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

I believe we were also supporting Iraq when he used gas to kill the Kurds. No government has clean hands. <br />We also supported the Shah of Iran who was very brutal. He was a little more subtle than Saddam.

You don't think oil was smuggled out of Iraq, sold, then baught by the USA at a premium? Naw Russia/France would't do that surely?
