Outboard Motor Fuel Type

Hello, I have a 1981 or 1983 Mariner 50HP outboard and currently stopped running. It is my first boat with outboard motor (am not familiar with marine engines too). I was told that the fuel for this motor is a mixture of gasolene (89 octane) and fuel additive contained in a 6-gallon plastic container with vacuum fittings and a water/fuel filter. I don't have a user manual and I don't know what to use. Can someone explain to me what to mix with the gasolene as motor fuel? I have been googling online on fuel/additive mixture ratio and got some partial answer. But I don't know what type of additive to mix with the gasolene, where you can get or can you buy it from local automotive stores, etc....

I appreciate anyone's input.

Thanks.

if this is a 2 stroke it needs two stroke oil (can get at any wallmart) 16 ounces per 6 gal. That would be a 50 to 1 ratio. You cannot run straight fuel in the motor or it will die from lack of lubrication. Also make sure the vent is open on the fuel tank when in use to let air flow in.

Thanks for the response. I presume my motor is a two stroke engine.

Be sure that the "2 stroke oil" is TC-W3 rated outboard oil. It is not necessary to use 89 octane gas. 87 octane unleaded regular is quite adequate.

When there is still fuel in the container, is there any additive to mix to stabilize the fuel mix in the container if it will not be used for many months?
Yes, it is called fuel stabilizer. Also available at Walmart or any auto store. Follow the directions on the can. It will need to be run through your motor as well. As a side note, if you have run your motor without mixing 2 stroke oil with your gas, you may have damaged it.
