outboard motor questions

i have a 1964 johnson seahorse 9.5hp thats been setting 4 a long time need to get started the guy i bought it from started it up when he gave it to me by just using new gas now i cant get it running but have only tried your normal start up procedures(pull rope&choke)also like to know where to get parts need a new pull rope

Poorkeyboy,<br /><br />First off, do not use starting fluid (ether).<br /><br />Here is what I would do.<br /><br />1. Get a manual. You can sometimes find them at the library. Or, they're availble on this site for about $25.00.<br /><br />2. Check for spark.<br /><br />3. Rebuild the carburetor-relatively simple.<br /><br />4. Replace the water pump impeller.<br /><br />5. Drain and refill the lower unit. Replace the drain and fill plug seals.<br /><br />The starter rope replacement on these can be quite tricky. The manual will walk you through.<br /><br />Any John/Rude dealer can supply parts. I prefer OEM.
